The ERC project LIFE has come to its official end. This day represents the conclusion of the bureaucratic part, but not of the activities that have been launched thanks to the ERC grant and that are thriving.

After 6 years of break, in May 2022 the permission arrived to resume fieldwork in the Western Desert. The Italian Mission to Umm al-Dabadib 2022 took place from May 19 until June 6.

Dr Antonello Migliozzi, Co-Director of the Italian Mission to Umm al-Dabadib, has been nominated Time Machine Ambassador for Southern Italy. LIFE is joining the Time Machine platform to disseminate the results of the project, as well as to create new connections with colleagues working on similar sites and subjects.

Corinna Rossi, Director of the Italian Mission to Umm al-Dabadib and Mohamed Ibrahim Ahmed, General Manager of the Kharga Antiquities published a joint paper on the current situation of a series of archaeological sites that have never been properly investigated, and that are in danger of being damaged or even destroyed by neglect and modern activities.

Welcome to two new team members! Nicoletta De Troia joined the team as historian and officially marked the opening of Work Package nos. 2 and 3, the study of the strategy and control of Egypt’s Western Desert in the Late Roman Period. Simone Galli started his PhD on the relationship between digital and material culture, with a special focus on the application of new technologies on the study of ancient artefacts. Not only Notre Dame burned today. The largest, and oldest tree at Umm al-Dabadib, the millenarian acacia that grew along the western side of the Northern Settlement, was reduced to ashes by a fire that must have lasted several days.
